The Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine is seeking to fill an immediate opening for a Vice-Chair Strategic Engagement. Academic rank and track are flexible depending upon the experience and expertise of the candidate and can be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level.

The Vice-Chair for Strategic Engagement in the Department of Psychiatry will be a catalyst and a visible presence in the department, focusing on creating and sustaining 1) inclusion and belonging, 2) evidence-based solutions to health equity, 3) representational diversity, 4) Intellectual diversity, and 5) cultural humility. The Vice-Chair will provide vision and leadership and lead the development, implementation, and oversight of programs and initiatives designed to create an environment where inclusive excellence is embedded in the departmental culture.

The Vice-Chair for Strategic Engagement will work with the Department Chair, other Vice-Chairs, division chiefs, educational program directors, faculty, staff, and trainees throughout the Department to set the vision for the Department’s initiatives related to retention and engagement. This position will guide our strategic efforts related to inclusion in partnership with the Center for Inclusive Excellence (CIE) at the IU School of Medicine. This position will report to the Department Chair, and the individual should have a track record of engagement in inclusive excellence efforts.

Specifically, the Vice-Chair for Strategic Engagement will:

· Serve on the departmental senior leadership team and be an active member of regular departmental vice chair, division director, or other leadership meetings, providing expertise applicable to all mission areas.

· Assess departmental benchmark performance in inclusive excellence and set department-specific targets and improvement plans with the CIE leadership and Department Chair.

· In collaboration with the CIE, monitor metrics applicable to the AAMC Diversity Engagement Survey (DES), retention, and promotion demographics. This includes periodically assessing, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the productivity and success of programs, policies, and services. This individual will present periodic progress reports to departmental leadership.

· Partner with the Office of Health Equity, Research, and Engagement (HERE), their departmental clinical vice chairs (and clinical health equity leader(s) if one exists), and the clinical effectiveness counsels to disaggregate existing departmental quality metrics, identify disparities in performance, and select targets for quality performance improvement.

· Provide vision and leadership for inclusion initiatives across the department’s tripartite mission, including clinical care, research, and education. These initiatives should align with departmental goals and the CIE Strategic Plan.

· Engage leadership regarding inclusive practices for recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and trainees and assist in creating key search committees and search committee processes.

· Identify and address barriers to faculty advancement and disparities in rank and, through inclusive practices, support the chair in the equitable advancement of all faculty.

· Represent the Department in the IUSM Diversity Council, healthcare systems, and other committees or venues related to the department’s equity and inclusion efforts.

· Advise the Chair and other departmental leaders on priorities, funding needs, and infrastructure support.

· Develop and maintain processes for evaluating and reporting the performance of inclusive excellence initiatives.

· Orient new staff, faculty members, residents, and fellows on the department’s inclusive excellence framework and resources offered by the department and the school of medicine.

· Identify inclusive practices and implement strategies to support and promote individuals from historically excluded and underrepresented groups so they may achieve their professional goals.

· Work closely with departmental leaders to foster a respectful and supportive workplace and learning environment.

· Celebrate successes, recognize excellence in performance, and communicate accomplishments to build pride and a culture of belonging.
