Position description The UCI School of Education is seeking a Director of the Teacher Education Program to oversee the UCI Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) + credential program. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of leadership in teacher education and expertise in curriculum, pedagogy, program administration, policy, and current research. The School of Education is seeking a visionary leader who will uphold and advance the program’s mission to prepare future teachers committed to ambitious, equitable and socially just teaching and learning. This is a primarily administrative, non-faculty position that works closely with the Faculty Director of the Teacher Education Program. The School of Education takes this approach to make stronger ties with the senate faculty and teacher education program to contribute to research initiatives to study and improve teacher preparation. These ties are designed to bring research into teacher education, while simultaneously, enabling teacher educators to inform and engage in research. Program Description The UCI Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) + credential program is a 14-month program that allows students to obtain either a Single Subject or Multiple Subject teaching credential. The MAT with Single Subject Credential program prepares candidates to teach one of six subject areas at the middle or high school level (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Science, World Languages, or Visual Arts). The MAT with Multiple Subject Credential program prepares students to teach all grade levels and content areas within the elementary school curriculum. Teacher candidates in both programs participate in a year-long school site apprenticeship, where they apply content-specific teaching practices and theories studied in coursework. New cohorts of teacher candidates begin the program in late June and complete the program the following July, which facilitates a seamless transition to the workforce at the start of a new academic year. Director Responsibilities Under the general direction of the Senior Associate Dean, The Director of Teacher Education provides overall management, supervision, and leadership of the program. This includes recruiting, hiring, and evaluating program personnel (i.e., lecturers, supervisors of teacher education, program coordinators, and program staff). The Director also cultivates district and school-based partnerships. The position oversees the marketing of the program, recruitment and retention of students, and collaborations with district administrators, principals, and mentor teachers. The program director also collaborates closely with the Faculty Director of Teacher Education and steering committee to establish and implement the program vision, oversee curriculum alignment, and provide strategic directions for program improvement (in alignment with state certification requirements). The Director also leads administrative aspects of the program, including but not limited to: ● Assessing the program and constituency needs ● Planning and develop academic programs ● Evaluating academic program activities and functions ● Coordinating and collaborating with other educator preparation programs at UCI ● Overseeing and managing the accreditation processes ● Identifying support resources for students and program instructors, supervisors, and mentors ● Developing proposals for extramural funding related to teacher education research and/or improvement ● Serving as liaison with local and state agencies and institutions in the public and private sectors Minimum Qualifications ● A doctoral degree (PhD or EdD) in education or related field ● Evidence of experience and success teaching adults and/or college-age students, including, but not limited to, instructor in a graduate, teacher preparation or undergraduate program, supervisor of student teachers, mentor for new teachers, instructor for professional development or new teacher induction programs ● Evidence of program coordination or program administration experience Desired Qualifications ● A California teaching credential in single or multiple subject ● Six or more years of teaching in public schools ● Experience with curriculum development or coordinating teacher education program activities ● Experience securing and managing grants ● Knowledge of, and experience with, technologies to support teaching and learning ● Familiarity with the latest research on disciplinary teaching and learning, including practical applications of the research ● Evidence of success working in teams ● Strong written and verbal communication skills ● Strong leadership skills ● Strong interpersonal skills Application and Review Full consideration will be given to complete applications received by November 3, 2023 but screening will continue until the position is filled.
