Position description

The Director leads the MIND Institute, providing overall strategic and intellectual direction for the Institute’s research programs, administrative structure, allocation of financial resources, and reviews of multidisciplinary clinical, education, research, and outreach efforts. The incumbent is responsible for creating and sustaining productive relationships with leaders across UC Davis Health Sciences and UC Davis. The Director will also support the continued success of the MIND Institute’s extramural funding, state funding, clinical revenue, and philanthropic fundraising.

The Director will collaborate with a broad community of stakeholders to envision and achieve the MIND Institute’s goals that align with UC Davis Health Sciences' mission and future vision. This inspirational scientific leader with a deep research background and proven administrative experience provides leadership in strategic vision and collaborative implementation to ensure the continued success and future growth of the MIND Institute. The incoming leader will be given a negotiated percent effort for leadership and administrative functions of the Institute. Additional duties and faculty rank will be influenced by candidate qualifications and interests, departmental needs, and clinical practice requirements, as applicable.

Additionally, the Director builds bridges with institutions in California and beyond to facilitate the scaling and dissemination of programs and collaborative research targeting neurodevelopmental disabilities to enhance the lives of patients and families and support the training, education, and research of medical/clinical trainees, graduate students, and faculty. In so doing, the Director enhances the visibility of the Institute and its activities regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Director partners with academic and clinical leaders to guide research and care in the Health Sciences and provides advice and counsel to campus- and University-level committees, as appropriate.

The Director of the MIND Institute has the following key responsibilities:

• Provide intellectual and administrative leadership and promote the efforts and capabilities of the MIND Institute to the UC Davis community at large and to current and potential collaborating institutions.
• In collaboration with the Associate Director and Chief Administrative Officer, oversee executive, financial, and research operations of the Institute.
• Work with and oversee Institute personnel including leadership, core faculty, principal investigators, and administrative support staff.
• Actively foster interdisciplinary, collaborative research and outreach programs.
• Maintain a leadership role in identifying extramural funding sources and fostering the creation of appropriate investigator teams to follow through with the preparation and submission of grant/contract proposals.
• Develop a strategic plan that will increase the visibility and reputation of the MIND Institute to better disseminate research findings to inform the public and policymakers.
• Take a leading role in outreach efforts, including interaction with an external Board of Advisors, distinguished lecturer series, and the organization of workshops and symposia.
• Integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into the everyday work and culture of the Institute.
• Collaborate with other campus research units such as the Clinical and Translational Science Center and Center for Reducing Health Disparities.
• Lead an extramurally funded research program that conducts outstanding research in epidemiology, health services research, healthcare economics, health equity outcomes research, or similarly related field with clear policy implications.
• Maintain proper adherence to all Office of Research and campus administrative, financial, and human resource policies and procedures.
• Partner with Health Sciences Development on philanthropic efforts.
• Participate actively in philanthropic planning and engagement with donors and prospects.
• Work cooperatively and collegially in a highly diverse environment.

The Director will hold the Angelo and Sofia Tsakopoulos-Louis and Wendy Vismara Administrative Chair in the MIND Institute.

In addition, the incumbent will meet the criteria to be appointed at the Associate or Full Professor rank, in an appropriate academic department within the School of Medicine at the University of California, Davis. Academic faculty responsibilities include clinical service in the area of specialty, as applicable; teaching medical students, residents, and fellows; conducting bench, clinical, and translational research as evidenced by a record of peer-reviewed publications and success in obtaining extramural funding, as applicable; and participation in professional and University service. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Candidates must have a broad set of critical skills to be successful as Director.

• MD, PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in a related area, including but not limited to Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Neurology. For MD applicants, additional requirements include board certification and fellowship training as applicable to one’s specialty, and subspecialty if applicable, and applicants must possess or be eligible for a California Medical License.
• Academic credentials that qualify for appointment as an Associate or Full Professor.
• A strong reputation for successful research and leadership of an interdisciplinary research program, division, or department, as well as knowledge of relevant national research trends, and a significant record of peer-reviewed scientific publications and success in securing extramural research funding.
• Demonstrated prior success at leading interprofessional teams and working across units.
• Ability to lead at both the strategic, tactical, and administrative levels, including experience managing space and financial resources.
• Ability to connect and nurture relationships with community members who serve as advisors and donors.
• Demonstrated leadership in diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence efforts.
• A strong history of written and verbal communication with a track record of working in a matrix organization, and interpersonal skills that demonstrate the capacity to work collaboratively and effectively with others.
• Demonstrated ability to inspire colleagues and staff to achieve excellent results.
• Demonstrated success in managing and leading a complex organization undergoing significant and persistent change, with the ability to innovate and generate new ideas.
• Demonstrated experience managing a unit’s financial resources including: operating within a defined budget, reviewing financial analyses and plans, and providing regular reports to institutional leadership.
• Demonstrated success in enhancing the research agenda of an academic unit or program, in responding to faculty needs and building environments that enhance research innovation, and in building programs and environments that enhance research productivity.
• Demonstrated ability to build a sense of community and to actively engage faculty, staff, students, and alumni in support of a shared strategic vision.
• A collegial, consultative management style, with the ability to be strong and decisive while also taking into account the needs and perspectives of faculty, staff, and students.
• A high level of integrity and professionalism, and a commitment to support the professional development of faculty and staff.
