Position description

The Media Arts and Technology Program seeks candidates who will teach a specialized course during winter quarter 2025 for PhD and Masters students: MAT 236 (Computational Systems for Visual Art and Design) or MAT 237 (Designing Expressive Technologies).

MAT 236 teaches basic approaches to modify creative programming languages and frameworks or develop new software interfaces for visual expression, while MAT 237 is run as a seminar involving discussion of readings and concepts presented in lecture and exploration of human-computer interaction research methodologies.

Media Arts and Technology (MAT) is a transdisciplinary graduate program at UCSB in both the College of Letters and Science (Division of Humanities and Fine Arts) and the College of Engineering. MAT offers Master’s and PhD degrees and has approximately 34 graduate students, 6 core faculty (some with joint appointments in engineering), plus 20 affiliate, teaching, and adjunct faculty across the university. Areas of expertise include human-computer interaction, electronic music and sound design, computational visual and spatial arts, and multimedia signal processing. Offices and labs are housed in the California Nanosystems Institute building (Elings Hall) at UCSB.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Applicants are expected to hold an advanced degree (a Master’s Degree at minimum) in Media Arts and Technology, Computer Science, Computer Music, Architecture and Design, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related creative field.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience teaching at least one graduate course in a media arts-related field
• Ability to utilize creative coding platforms and algorithms
• Ability to lead lectures and discussions on media arts and technology design, engineering, and creative practice
• Have demonstrated excellence in academic achievement
• Have a strong commitment to teaching and demonstrated interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary creative activity and/or scholarship
