Position description

The Departments of Linguistics and Statistics at University of California, Davis jointly invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position starting Fall 2024. We are seeking an engaged individual, willing to help in creating an exciting environment involving the two thriving departments. A successful candidate is expected to develop a research program at the intersection of Linguistics, Statistics and Data Science. Within this intersection, the candidate’s focus of inquiry will remain wide open. Interests can range from probabilistic approaches to language processing, to the investigation of societal consequences of big language data or the application of computational methods to social sciences, to mention but a few.

Desired qualifications include the ability to teach pertinent classes in both linguistics and statistics. Mentoring of undergraduate students, supervision of graduate students, involvement in curricular development, and performance of university service are expected. A Ph.D. in Linguistics, Statistics, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, or a closely related field must be completed by the beginning of instruction.

Applicants should submit: curriculum vitae, a cover letter that clearly states reasons for the candidate’s interest in the position, qualifications, and a summary of academic trajectory; statements of research and teaching interests, official graduate transcripts, one writing sample (publication, submitted manuscript, or dissertation chapter), and three letters of recommendation. This recruitment is conducted at the Assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the Assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee’s qualifications. Appointment level and salary are commensurate with experience. A reasonable estimate for this position is $101,000 to $145,000.

The position will remain open until filled. Applications received by November 15, 2023 will receive full initial consideration.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment, UC Davis conducts a reference check on all first choice candidates for Academic Senate Assistant Professor Steps 4, 5, or 6, or positions eligible for tenure. The reference check involves contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Davis requires all applicants for any open search for assistant professor to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists considered for Academic Senate Assistant Professor Steps 4, 5, or 6, or positions eligible for tenure will be subject to reference checks.
